Branson to hold public meeting Nov. 7 to discuss American Gondola project
Presenting plan for the mass transportation system in Branson area

Branson, Mo. A public, informal meeting to discuss a possible gondola project will be held at Shindigs Restaurant next to the Mickey Gilley Theater on Monday, November 7. Meetings will be every hour beginning at 10:30 AM with the final meeting set for 6:30 PM. This is a joint effort between American Gondola, Inc., the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and the Taney County Partnership seeking to promote economic development in Branson and the surrounding area.

The general public, business owners, news media representatives and other interested parties are invited to attend the presentations that will last 15 to 20 minutes in an “open house” format. Representatives of American Gondola will be present to answer questions between presentations. There will also be a table with petitions for those who want to support the project.

In response to the traffic congestion and lack of a mass transit plan, a new and privately funded approach by American Gondola, Inc., has been proposed. The solution comes in the form of a “gondola,” and will include a comprehensive mass transportation system from Branson Landing along Mo. Hwy. 76 to Shepherd of the Hills Expressway to Silver Dollar City. It would use 8- to 12-passenger enclosed, climate-controlled cars, with 11 to 13 terminals for loading and unloading passengers. The cars would avoid traffic jams completely and operate in rain, snow, ice, and lightning conditions.

The gondola is a “green” form of transportation with no pollution, no noise, and limited land disturbance. The proposed gondola mass transit system would be the only one of its kind in the United States and would rival many in the world, becoming a significant advance in the use of gondola technology worldwide. The team that has been assembled to implement the gondola project includes Leitner-Poma Worldwide as the equipment supplier and a prime contractor and southwest Missouri’s Killian Construction Company would serve as another contractor.

In order to obtain funding for the gondola project, American Gondola, Inc. must have written support from the City of Branson.  The results of the public meeting, along with business owner petitions, will be presented to the City to support the request for the Memorandum of Understanding between the City and American Gondola, Inc. The request may be presented to the Board of Aldermen of the City for their consideration at both City Board meetings of Nov. 8 and Nov. 22.
